Cannabidiol or CBD is a cannabinoid with wide therapeutic potential. It is not psychotropic or addictive.


It is safe for consumption by people of any age. It works as an aid in the treatment of various ailments or as a supplement to have a better quality of life.

We understand by cannabinoid the substance that meets any of the following characteristics, divided into three categories:

Phytocannabinoids are terpenophenolic compounds. To this day we know that not only cannabis can produce cannabinoids. These compounds may or may not interact with human cell receptors. With this information we know that CBD is a phytocannabinoid, then we have endocannabinoids, substances that mammals produce naturally or endogenously.

 Endocannabinoids activate the body’s cannabinoid receptors to modulate basic physiological processes for the proper functioning of the body. Sleep, appetite, pain, inflammation, and nerve signals are these receptors that some Phytocannabinoids can activate.

 Lastly, we have synthetic cannabinoids. Some are replicas of phytocannabinoids and are used as medicine and some are for research use. Do not consume them in adulterated psychoactive products as they have irreversible negative effects on the nervous system, they are not suitable for human consumption.


Entering the world of cannabidiol (CBD)


But what is cannabidiol or CBD? CBD is one of the hundreds of molecules that cannabis contains, many products contain this cannabinoid in isolation.

 Thanks to the evidence we know that Cannabidiol has great potential as an analgesic, antioxidant, anticonvulsant, antidepressant, antipsychotic, anxiolytic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective.

 So what is cannabidiol or CBD? It is important to mention that it is not a medicine and it is not a magic cure for diseases. It is a coadjuvant to reduce the signs and symptoms of some diseases and raise the quality of life of people.

 Among the signs and symptoms most frequently treated with cannabidiol are seizures, spasticity, neuropathy, nausea, inflammation, pain, and psychosis.

 These symptoms can be caused by diseases such as sclerosis, autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, epilepsy, diabetes, and other chronic degenerative diseases. As if this were not enough, it can help alleviate the side effects of other treatments such as chemotherapy.

 Maybe you think CBD is something new. Not so, the molecule was isolated at the University of Illinois in the 1940s.

 It was not until the 60’s when the investigation regarding its pharmacological action began, first its chemical structure was described. Cannabinoid receptors were discovered to exist and their health effects were investigated after these findings.

 So much progress has been made on this issue that, in 2017, after the meeting of the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence in the framework of the thirty-ninth Geneva convention, that of the World Health Organization (WHO) determined that:

 “Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive molecule from the Cannabis sativa L. plant, is not a dangerous substance, on the contrary, it has a high therapeutic potential.”


How does cannabidiol (CBD) interact?


To date we know that CBD acts by several routes modulating chain reactions, blocking or activating receptors directly or indirectly. Increases the half-life of endocannabinoids with the inhibition of the FAAH enzyme, regulating the polarity of neurons and stimulating the production of 2-AG. An endocannabinoid in charge of regulating intake, peripheral sensory perception, microcirculation, and hematopoiesis (formation of red blood cells).

 CBD is metabolized in the liver by CYP3A4, CYP2C19 enzymes, and their isoforms, belonging to the Cytochrome P450 complex. Approximately 60% of prescription drugs are metabolized by CYP3A4.

 We recommend that if you are under medical treatment, you take CBD with professional advice for best results and to avoid negative drug interactions. Like, for example, if your medicine induces enzymes that break it down, you may not get the benefits you want.

 Hemp and marijuana are called chemotypes because what differentiates them is their chemical composition. Hemp is very low in tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychotropic molecule in cannabis, the limit allowed to consider it hemp can vary from one country to another. In general, it is between 0.3% and 1%.

 Plants that exceed these THC levels are considered marijuana. Hemp is a very versatile plant that is not only used to extract CBD. Since ancient times it has been used for its fibers to produce cloth, rope, paper and to consume its seeds as food.


CBD in anti-doping


In 2018 the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) removed CBD from its banned substances allowing athletes to use CBD as a supplement.

 So CBD is not wanted in drug drugs. These tests detect THC metabolites, however, this does not mean that CBD cannot be found in the blood. It can be detected if it is specifically searched for through clinical studies focused on expanding our knowledge of cannabidiol.
